Biographical or Historical Information

Dr. Clair J. Butterfield received his Ph. D. from the University of Iowa in 1945. In 1946 he was appointed to the faculty at Edinboro State Teachers College, eventually becoming chair of the school’s Department of Education. He became acting President of Edinboro State College in March 1966 after the death of acting president Harry W. Earlley. He served in that capacity until September 1966 when Chester T. McNerney was chosen as the new president. In 1973, the newly constructed teacher education building on the Edinboro campus was named in his honor.Note written by Barry Gray

Abstract

Clair Butterfield was a faculty member at Edinboro State College and served as the chairperson of the school's Department of Education.  After the untimely death of acting president Harry Early, Dr. Butterfield became the interim president.
